Bio

Rick Hellman is a senior clinical nephrologist with a broad base in clinical nephrologist and specific interests in acute kidney injury, contrast nephropathy, hypertension, fluid   and electrolyte disorders particularly disorders of Potassium metabolism , anemia in CKD, CKD management, infection in patients with renal disease, hemodialysis of toxins and poisons and glomerulonephritis with a particular interest in IgA nephropathy.  At present he is involved in clinical teaching and mentoring of medical students, Residents and Renal Fellows as a consultant in nephrology at IUHP.  While at Indiana University he has had a major interest in ESRD care as it relates to the inner city patient populations and presently has an interest in health care and public policy as it relates to renal disease.   He was prior medical director at DCI Indianapolis, and medical director of the hypertension clinic at Indiana University Hospital and IUHP.

Dr. Hellman received a BA in Economics from Roosevelt University, and an MD degree from the Baylor College of Medicine.  He did his internship in internal medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine and Residency in internal Medicine at the University of Texas San Antonio and a Fellowship in Nephrology at Washington University Barnes Hospital.  After completion of his Fellowship in nephrology he was a consultant in Nephrology at the Duluth Clinic subsequently Essentia Health and Associate Clinical Professor of Nephrology and adjunct Professor of Physiology at the University of Minnesota, Duluth .

After 20 years in private practice he returned to clinical academic medicine at Indiana University to devote more time to clinical teaching and research.  He has been at Indiana University for 21 years.

Dr. Hellman is a member of the ASN, ACP, NKF, NKFI, and prior member of the Mayo Nephrology Collaborative group and present member of the Contrast Media Workgroup Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety (CPS), Inc. Contrast Media Workshop.   Over the course of his career he has received several medical teaching awards including The Minnesota Medical Foundation Clinical teacher of the year, Fellowship Clinical Teacher of the Year Award Indiana University Division of Nephrology

  • Research

    My research interests are in the areas of clinical nephrology and hypertension. Topics of interest to me are myoglobinuruc acute renal failure, acute renal failure in the context of multiple organ system failure, and toxic shock syndromes, management of acute renal failure, TTP, HUS,and renal failure related to infectious diseases, particularly viral disease. In the area of chronic renal failure my interests are in the treatment of anemia, and the evaluation of general medical reccomendations as they apply to the patient on maintenance dialysis. In the area of glomerular disease I am interested in the diagnosis and treatment of IgA nepropathy, focal sclerosing glomerulonephritis, and renal vasculitic syndromes, particularly ANCA-related disease. In the area of fluid and electolyte, and acid –base metabolism I have an interest in potassium metabolism, and disorders of water metabolism.
